Efficient Outcomes

We live in a world that is flawed by you, and everyone you do and don't know.  Those everyone's are humans; homo sapiens that reside at the top of the food chain but way below the chain of common sense.

Not to beat up on humans, I love being one, but let's take a look at some primary accusations the rest of living organisms might make if they could, well...only find a way to communicate with us.  One perfect example can be found in a book titled Ishmael.  While I don't purport this novel to answer humanities failures, but it does probe into the culture of our behavior.

We lack the ability to respond to a fundamental reality of finite resources because in an economic system the value of these resources are externalities that hold little meaning in comparison to wealth building in financial terms.  We fail miserably in efficient outcomes.

Why?  A culture of belief that never ending consumption, is the key to our remaining at the top of the evolutionary chain.  This includes development, a term that has evolved from the establishment of civilization. Humans have a tendency to conquer rather than coexist.  As Darwin might say, survival is based on one's ability to thrive over another organism.  Evidence of this can be seen not only in grand edifice as a symbol of human greatness, but in our crowing achievement of eliminating disease.

To be certain, there is no turning back the magnitude of our achievement, though cataclysmic they may be in
scale.  Sure we will see glimpses of a change in the tides but culture is a difficult thing to change.  Not only are we slow to respond, in many cases we are just to late.  It is human culture that  is the greatest contributor to the accelerating background extinction rate, dominating the landscape with estimates from 1000 to 10,000 times normal extinction rates of other living organisms-- that is the impact of a civilized society.  Wikipedia has a very interesting way of stating it, as long as species have been evolving, species have been going extinct; no species is evolving faster than humans.

Boston's Finest B & E

It's 3:03 a.m. and Boston's Finest(Estb. 1854) has just finished doing reconnaissance and dusting my place for finger prints.
After a late night B & E, I placed a call to my local 911. Before long, and after establishing that my event is a non-critical emergency, the 911 operator dispatches Boston's Blue to my address. Within 30 minutes, I receive a call that they are down stairs waiting. An officer responds, followed by a sergeant and a detective.
Every day officers from the Boston Police Department (BPD) make their way to residents and citizens in need of their assistance. And though it is not my wish to ever have to call them for any type of emergency, it is nice to know that they are there and on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week and 365 days out of the year. Wait... lets make that 425 days of the year, if you calculate officers over time, take away from family time and just plain time to contribute to making our lives a little more comfortable.
Have you ever stopped to think what The City would be like without them. How much more insecure would you feel? Think about it. No one to call during the Marathon emergency, no direction during special events, no response to emergencies such as a violent crime, and no one to respond to the smaller emergencies. No one to intervene in domestic violence, in general no one to offer a safer more secure City.
Granted the BPD is not perfect, but I have to acknowledge the fact that neither am I; so it is important to acknowledge what we appreciate about them when our opportunity comes.
Thank you for standing up to the criminals that are not concerned about the quality of life most people want for their children; thank you for stopping by the schools and talking to the students to create a better relationship with students and letting them know that you are there to help them first, not threaten them; thank you for being considerate and allowing the ambulances to make their way during an emergency; thank you for getting out of bed to dust for fingerprints because someone broke into my house; thank you for being approachable and thank you for not disliking me because another citizen was a jerk and fucked up your day.
Your job is a tough one on many levels; from salary restrictions and cutbacks to risking your life and everything between those ends of the spectrum; office politics, law suits, lies and challenges towards advancement; and the resources you need will not always be at your disposal-- you try harder nonetheless. I appreciate everything you do right, every time you do the right thing and every time you try to do that.
From us, the residents of Boston who don't take time to thank you enough. Thank You. Please continue to do your best and I will continue to acknowledge why we should be thankful you are here.
I say hello every time I pass you even if I don't know you; I may say have a great day, just because I don't think anyone else has and perhaps that is enough to make a difference in your day. I hope the result is that you might make things a bit easier on someone else-- pay it forward.
You put in a lot of hours and a lot of years, but it does not go without thanks for what you add to the City, and the people who live here-- we are in need of your service.
After a total of about 3 hours, all of the officers from Boston's Finest have left the crime scene in my home. My home has returned to the secure feeling place it was at one time, despite the impact of the criminal who broke in, knowing that Boston's Finest is not too far away. Though every mystery will not be solved, every criminal will not be caught; justice will not always be served, you still make a difference.
In their wake (the visitors in Blue), advise, good conversation, assurance, and insights that reinforce my confidence in their ability to carry our their job. They leave me with a bit more appreciation then before they arrived. They are good people, not just cops.

New York, Personal Development, Journeys and Paths

New York City, just having recovered from an unexpected amount of snowfall the night before, I am sitting in my hotel room after benefiting from doing one of my favorite things.  Being caught off readiness for a few brief unexpected moments, with an individual.  As a member of my client group, she wanted to talk about my philosophy around happiness as it relates to personal development.

These conversations tend to be heart-felt and meaningful.  Because it takes me to a space I truly enjoy being in, I am always glad to fit it into my schedule-- even unexpectedly.  Events such as this also help me reinforce what I believe deeply; that once you understand happiness, you will never allow yourself to go back to any other permanent space.  Maintaining a state of happiness is or understanding how to achieve it can be technical in that there can often provide steps to get closer to where one might want to be (you will have to where that is for yourself in many cases).

The conversation began with asking how I got to be where I am.  A very provocative questions, much more meaningful than a simple what do you do.  I understood instantly what she meant; it had nothing to do with me being great or impressive, but everything to do with seeking a pathway to arrive at a place of peace, fulfillment, continuation of your journey that has meaning and is not just an activity based obligation.

There are some simple rules to follow the first of which is to be humble.  I consider it a great honor to be asked question such as this because it means that I am on the right path.  To be worthy to be asked a question about something is a great responsibility; it means second, that you have a responsibility to be honest and truthful, as well as liberal about what you are about to... third) share (the true gift of sharing is not to expect anything in return, similar to the gift of giving).  My genuine hope is that my words help others to grow, not because of who one might be or their status, but because of what exists that is able to be seen if only looked upon the right way.  This revelation comes because of the way something is said or presented not to the credit of who is saying it.  The balance of giving and receiving can be found here, and explains why one must give liberally; you will at some point also receive equally.  Why? Because the doors of opportunity open and we become more understanding of those doors as portals to where we should be directing our energies for our next movement, as we give and share. These are Windows (for me), many of which I have.

My Windows allow me to explore how to improve my capacities in the human experience; the capacity to listen, Love, understand, be more effective, advance my goals, and get closer to being the person that I am in pursuit of.  One example is sailing.  Sailing moves my soul in a very personal way, whether sailing with someone or alone it ups my level of connection with myself, the environment, even my work objectives; it provides me with the space to find out where I am with something, removes any clutter and repairs areas within I didn't know needed my attention.  Each person has these Windows, but they are not always understood.

I have chosen Windows because they metaphorically and literally are very important in my life.  I need to see things clearly.  In my work I need to be able to see clearly what my clients need to align and clear certain systems.  With my personal activities I may need to see clearly why I am doing something and with what purpose.  I can better arrive a answers that make sense and add continuity to my actions, improving my results overall.

...How did I arrive in the space I am now?  Many years of self examination, empirical data, technical understandings, and a continual search to be driven by where I am not yet.  I suppose it is an obsession to be right with all things (possible or not, from a practical perspective), but man is not always practical.   My destination is ahead of me and my hope is to catch up to it one day.  In the process, I will continue to work on myself, offer what I learn as a tool for others only if they would like to receive it; and leave the space I occupy better then when my person occupied it.

Ready for Something Old, That's New

Words from a friend, memories of our past; a change that is familiar.  This is where this short story begins- at the end.

Yesterday I tracked down an old friend.  Curious as to whether the effort to do so even made sense, while going through the hoops of making phone call after phone call, through the city's resources.  Are my expectations too high; are we even in the same place-- in terms of our thinking.

No this isn't about Love, but I have a strong belief that good friendships form when the elements in the Universe are aligned, and the path of two individuals or more cross.  Something amazing happens; it could be that each person just needed to hang out and have a beer; it could be that each person was growing past where they were and evolving into someone/ something new; it could be that it was just the right place and the right time to connect.

These types of events have occurred at different times in my, Guatemala once when I encountered a mixture of international Spanish studying students from Germany, USA, Sweeden and Switzerland all converged in a small town Antigua among the hills in Central America.  One of the best chance encounter experiences of my life.  Interestingly enough, I always associated these encounters with meeting new people, never friends from the past.

We often make the mistake that these events only happen when we fall in Love or get romantic; I am here to tell you some of the most amazing friends I have ever met had nothing to do with romance, but more the right place at the right time.  These are friends for life; these relationships bare the gift of being able to pick up where they left off.

That is where my story picks up.  After calling several city departments, fire stations, and waiting for an emergency to complete it's cycle, etc. I caught up with my friend.  The best thing I could have expected that day was his reaction to my call.

His words were simple "I'm ready for something old, that's new".  This was his response after inquiring about his well being, his family and life in general.  I was glad to hear that he was doing well and even more glad that an old friend, despite the decades that had passed, that the friendship and memories we had as children was strong enough to withstand the test of time.  If nothing else occurred and we never met again, those few words held a lifetime of meaning.  That statement said it all.  There is no substitute for the strength of friendship that has stood the test of time.

If you have this friend, go out and find them.  It will be worth the effort.

Living Your Dream

Living your dream is often clouded by the obligations that clutter our life.  Some of these obligations are necessary others are well deserving of an adjustment.  The real conversation to have with yourself is what is my dream life, how do I begin living my dream life, and what changes do I need to make.

The dictionary's definition of dream is a visionary creation of imagination.  The two most important words in that definition are creation and imagination.  Let's start by looking at creation because often people get confused, and that creation or being creative is a quality that does not necessarily get you far in life unless you are recognized as a having super stardom status in society.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Creation by definition is the act of bring the world into order or existence... So being creative can be quite orderly and very productive.

Think about how you feel when your creative juice are flowing, whether you're helping your child with an school project, your playing a game, or you have figured out how to navigate a solo hike; it may even have been a time you offered someone really good advice that resulted in their advancement.  Being creative is crucial to our growth and development.  Imagination is similarly misunderstood.

Your imagination helps to visualize what is possible and can very easily lead to fulfilling your dreams.  The dictionary say imagination is the act or power of forming a mental image of something not present in the senses...  Imagination has helped us as a society reach the moon; on an individual level it has lead people to become amazing leaders such as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a man who found a deep sense of purpose by imagining liberating a people.  The amazing thing about imagination is that it is so vast, from technology to motivation from dreaming to artwork- it is truly limitless, what better expression of the human spirit is there?

So begin living your dream by allowing your creativity and imagination to go to work for you.  What is so amazing about this allowance is that it costs you nothing and the rewards are amazing.  How do you begin living your dream?  First you must be true to what your dream is.  Do not restrict yourself with initial conditions otherwise your dream will become polluted with barriers.  Second you should be conscious about what it will take to achieve your dream.  Often great sacrifices to things you are attached to must be let go, but that should become part of a plan to achieve your dream.  Determine if those attachments are holding you back, and if so release them.  As you find yourself getting closer you will also find liberated that those attachments did not mean as much as you thought they did.  Third you need a plan that has some guidelines, without knowing what you want to achieve, and understanding when you arrive at that dream, you can easily become lost.  Living your dream life means change at the deepest level, it requires understanding who you are at a primal level; this in of itself will open all kind of doors about who you are, what you really want out of life, who you select to interact with, how you go about having conversations etc.

As you get closer to achieving that dream, new doors will open for you and it will be your task to recognize them and determine if that is the portal to your next dream. Remember that doors may be as simple as feeling more happy or as different as choosing a new career. Life does not have to stop when you have arrived at the dream, that is the beauty of being human, you can continue to dream and set courses to achieve those dream time and time again once accomplished.

Every Year Freeze

(tap on any of the images to enlarge)
It was a clear day so I did one of my favorite things to do, drive; my other favorite thing to do is being happy.  Today it was the combination of driving, and dropping my body temperature into near freezing water.  I made an early departure out of Boston and headed to Cape Cod so I could jump in the Atlantic Ocean.  This is my new annual ritual as of last year.  The big answer and question towards the end of this article is, Why.

It was already the 20th of the month and though I did not make my New Year’s Day goal of making the jump on January 1st, I was determined to make it happen today.  The air was warm enough earlier in the day to allow me to open my window for a little while- but only a little while.  As a hiker I started to think about needing to preserve my body heat for when I enter the ocean, so I decided to close the window after about 10 minutes.

Last year, I visited P-Town (Province Town for those who are not familiar with the area), located in Cape Cod.  I went to Herring Cove Beach because it is the farthest point East in the United States.  There is something very special about being at an end point; it arouses something primal, deep within us.  Understanding that there is no more available.  Think about it, no more water, electricity, food, land, people etc.  Upon my arrival for the first time last year, I was surprised to see so many friendly people, seemingly seeking something similar to myself.  Among those people were 4 women who had decided to jump in the Atlantic Ocean naked (commonly called skinny dipping in the U.S.)  I asked them if I could take their picture and they agreed to allow me to do so(see this blog).  Feeling inspired I followed suit, mainly because I had an overwhelming feeling to do something different, memorable.  I recall taking off my clothes and staying in the ocean for about 10 minutes before feeling the need to retreat.  It was much warmer last year(among the 10 warmest in U.S. history) It was also one of the most liberating experiences I ever had.  Something about breaking convention, doing something you have never done, and taking yourself to new limits.

I felt like I had taken life by the horns and continued on the path to shape my own future.  This journey is not new for me; several years ago I made a decision to transform my perspective on life.  I had committed to being happy every day of my life (see blog here).  Put simply, I have molded my life around my Windows- it is those Windows that are the force behind my happiness.

I arrived at my destination and reflected briefly on the road trip out here.  The fact that it was Winter, the trees were bare left me feeling very alone though listening to Sarah McLachlan Building A Mystery, kept me company.  Now at Herring Cove, I drove over small piles of sand left by the strong winds, mading my way to the parking lot; a long stretch of space to accommodate the large population of Summer visitors- very different than today.  Though by the time I departed, there were probably 20 cars on the beach.

The ocean swells were close to seven feet (2.2 meters).  For a moment I thought about the risk of an under tow that could potentially pull me under.  The winds were billowing at about 35 miles per hours, the tide was rising and it made sense for me to give this a second thought.  So I did.  I thought to myself, if this is that way I go, it is worth it.  I love the ocean, sailing, swimming and deep sea diving; I can't think of anything else that offers so many ways to enjoy what it has to offer.  While I thought there was a risk, I decided it was minimal.  I went back to the car, pulled out my towel out and headed back to the water.  I peeled off my clothes, stuffed them in the sleeves of my winter coat and took the plunge.  I was so motivated that I returned to the car, covered by my towel, retrieved my camera (to take the picture below), and jumped back in the ocean for a second time.  I am so certain that anyone would share my enthusiasm that I invite anyone to join me on January 1, 2014 and see how powerful this experience can be for yourself.

Why?  The real question is why not?  We can spend the rest of our lives wishing we climbed that mountain, ran that marathon, committed to a cause we really believe in, took a chance and started that business, or took that trip around the world.  My life is now tailored to what makes me happy, not in a selfish way, but in a way that makes me feel more alive.  Experiencing being in temperatures easily capable of inducing hypothermia does just that;  it reminds me how amazing the simple things in life can be, and something else;  it is a transformation away from the typical existence, making me acutely aware of the gift of life.  Never will you feel more alive than when you are in the face of a great challenge.  Never will you feel more successful than when you overcome that challenge; do so, and your self equity rises exponentially.  Next year, same place, same time

Emerge And Lead

This is not a political article, but rather a chance to looks at politics as an intro to the this article. President Obama of the United States, has successfully emerged as the winner in the presidential elections.   And while there are multiple stories about what is next for President Obama, we cannot  overlook the opportunity to understand what leadership means at such a juncture from a business challenge sense.

This is also an opportunity for us as individuals to assess where we stand as leaders.  Regardless of your position politically, there are multiple lessons we can take away as well as reflect on what is next.  Why?  The response is less complex than the answer.  The President has overcome multiple obstacles, succeeded despite less funding, and set yet another record among a list of his accomplishments, namely only the second two term democratic president since Franklin D. Roosevelt.

From The Economist to WSJ, academic and business entities alike, are pointing fingers, asking questions, questioning answers and drawing conclusions about the entire process.  What better time to ask ourselves about decisions we might make in the wake of our own aftermath-- it is the perfect storm.

Let's start with behaviors.  Within any organization, behaviors impact performance, relationships, and innovation.  While there are multiple other angles to consider, these few offer more than a handful of discussion points.

Performance figures help provide matrices to better understand where we are as individuals, as a team and as an organization.  President Obama had variable performance outputs that left many questioning his ability to secure his re-election.  In business we think a bit differently.  Ones performance can be outstanding from a technical perspective, meaning they have a solid grasp of the building requirements, integration, and deliverables.  Possession of these components makes for a useful individual when considering strategic plans that create a road map for advancement of organizational initiatives.  While there can be a distinct divide between leadership and one with technical expertise, a great leader will likely have technical expertise in many of the areas someone with masterful technical skills has as a specialist.  Most hopefully, their leadership has been an accumulation of their experience that in part, carried them up the ladder.  A leader understands how to use abilities in key members, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of team leaders, thereby helping him or her assemble an effective team-- resulting in a strong department.  What does that leader look for  look in the technical leader?  In the early stages of building a team, they want someone who can create a strong foundation.  A department could be in the process of being rebuilt, in which case they are also looking to create a solid foundation.  In many instances you are working without the infrastructure needed to innovate, but in the beginning, you need to ensure the correct pieces are in place to make the right things happen, otherwise integration will be enormously difficult whether with other departments or businesses/ institutions.  The inability to integrate most often results in isolation which can manifest moderately and grow more extreme depending on the composition of the team.  With strong technical attributes meeting performance expectations becomes a much smaller worry when building this way.

Relationships are a very different creature.  Drucker and Senge both write extensively about behavior and relationships; the reason is simple, behavior is a shape-shifter.  By shape-shifter we mean the way in which (when taken in the root form) we relate, to others.  We should look at relationships in multiple ways; spatial relationship and social relationship.  Where does your organization stand with relation to competitors and stakeholders (anyone who is significantly affected by your operations, determined by your understanding of your network map).  You also need to be able to understand what significance means for your organization; it may vary widely- measured in dollars or equity/  intrinsic value.  From a social perspective, your relationships should be increasing opportunities through new networks, better working relations, healthy departments (where team leaders interact with, communicate, and encourage their team members).   An example is General Electric's practices in information sharing and service-support, to increase loyalty of its corporate partners.  While this is an external relationship example, it speaks to the extent which we should consider key relationships.  When looking for new opportunities, an organic process occurs when one is consistently nurturing this aspect of their work.  Withing your organization members in different departments not only feel comfortable going to different departments for assistance or collaboration, they also understand when might be the best opportunity to turn to a potential collaborator.  This is assuming members understand technical boundaries; not so much because they are limited in their expertise but rather they understand the nature of their own work and enough of the nature of their colleagues work to know that an opportunity exists.

Innovation nearly speaks for itself, which is likely why we deal with it last.  Innovation should be occurring all the time.  Understanding from a performance perspective, when performance in this area is not developing is easy.  That being said, let's look at a couple of angles.  When your organization is stuck in decision-making, it could be lacking innovation.  Decision-making is crucial and often not spoken of, so I decided to mention it here.  Think about this, when we are not clear about what direction to go, who to turn to, what to offer, how to proceed, how do we respond; we lack product innovation, social innovation (how to build new networks) that are most relevant to your mission and objectives-- not just jumping on the next big trend in communication or technology.  And in terms of knowing what direction to go, innovation often comes from exposure that goes beyond company boarders.

Fresh creative ideas backed by technical expertise help us understand when windows of opportunity are open; boroughing deeply because team members are able to sniff out new opportunities.  Innovation if using one relative word might be thought of as clairvoyance.  The cavities in one's mind are open widely sensitive to when the course is lacking certain commodities or when the course is simply not the right one.  More importantly innovation staves off trouble in many instances because of a certain readiness that exists for change.

Leaders, Leading and Leadership

by Scotland Willis

Merriam Webster's definition of the word "lead" is to a: guide on a way especially by going in advance b: to direct on a course or in a direction c: to serve as a channel for.  Derived from Old English visa vi Old German.

Google does a search of 285,000,000 subjects on "lead" in .19 seconds; there are probably as many books written on the subject (though not likely produced in .19 seconds); and just this morning I was watching a woman and her one year old child carrying the keys to reenact his ,mothers actions of opening the door- following her lead.  This is all to say that there are countless facets to leadership, and how people approach the matter, however there are also some expectations that come along with leaders, leading and leadership that are worth of conversation.  And there there are simply times when we forget to remind ourselves of the dynamics of leadership resulting in a misstep.

We will start with what is the most important component that deserves honorable mention, but not spend too much time on.  The reason is because it is all consuming and can easily become a more extensive conversation.

Communication is the portal to all other decisions being made or initiatives being undertaken.  Lets see if we can sum this up in a truncated paragraph.  Effectively communicating what leaders are attempting to accomplish, how things will proceed (intentionally not stating how they will proceed), proper channels for communication, time-lines for execution(when part of a project begins)/ implementation(when a project is fully utilized), and an input/ feedback mechanism, that allow all levels of the organization to be active participants-- are all a priority.  Communication sets the tone for involvement; it either pulls people and turns them on or creates barriers and turns them off.  It is important that leadership thinks through and decides how the initiative or project will roll out.  This process should not occur alone by a single individual; it is in fact important to have dissenting opinions on your team of leaders, to ensure nearly all avenues have been considered. (Recommended reading Time article / book The Presidents Club)

I cannot emphasize enough making an organizational chart relative to the proper channels, available to anyone involved so that everyone is clear about the protocol for feedback and response- it will eliminate wires getting crossed.  This does not mean that every concern or interest will be implemented; nor does it mean leaders will not ultimately make different decisions, but it is more inclusive.  In the long run, it means greater retention of key talent, less investment in training and development and and maintaining institutional and intellectual capital.

Leading is not all together a different matter leadership, but should be thought of differently.  Leading occurs once the well thought out plan begins.  Leading allows point people to be established in the eyes of others and sets the course of their role as liaisons, to open up channels to the broader audience of management and staffers.  Initially an announcement would have gone out about an initiative for larger project under way and the broader audience is prepared to engage and listen.  That should be followed up with an input / feedback session that occurs between the point people and everyone below that chain of command.  References if discovered for interested individuals should also be provided.

Leaders and followers
Critical thinking is indisputably one of the most important skills a person can have.  It prevents errors from occurring, improves productivity and allows disruptive innovation to occur.  But critical thinking takes place in different stratospheres.  Critical thinkers in the lower level of the organization and then critical thinking as leaders.  Critical thinking as leaders (relative to the project) are occupied with what might be red flags that come up in a project and possibly derail the work; they are thinking about existing resources and models that may or may not be applicable; and they are reading all the necessary material so that they can have prepared and valid responses to questions that may arise, which instills a sense of confidence among the remaining members of the institution that the plan is well thought out.  Additionally it reflects that in making adaptations to their own organization(especially true if you are utilizing existing models and references) that the leaders are cognizant of the differences that exist between other organizations or institutions that used the model and their own.  Be confident as a leader about point out that differences were observed and you will gain support.  This also requires that leaders at all levels of an organization are in touch with systems that are in place and whether they are functional or dysfunctional- only then can you make valid call about the accuracy of your assessments.  For your observations and assertions to be both valid and accurate is of the highest regard.

Not everyone is meant to be leader but what is often overlooked is that not everyone is meant to be a follower.  Individuals who feel stymied in their role as an employee will, rest assured, be leaving soon- a significant loss for any organization.  We are not talking about people who are not productive, complain, or require attention for no apparent reason; here we are talking about the employee who is a highly valued contributor to the overall efforts of the organization, its vision and potential.  These people are consistently striving to exceed benchmarks, vested because they are personally driven- these are the high achievers.  If these individuals exist in your organization find a way to make them leaders and put their assets to work more effectively.  Ask yourself what is the organization missing that this person sees;  does the organization have the capacity to utilize their potential.  People who are critical thinkers at a the sublevels of the organization are such in order to ensure that errors don't occur at their level, that the tools they have work effectively and properly, and that the community being served is being serviced in the best possibly way.  In a leadership capacity, you must have your eye on the organization, looking at systems, tools and mechanisms that allow for consistently improved/ functional operations.

Some people will choose to engage in various project or initiatives and others will not.  Those who do not engage, well, that is their problem.  If you choose to be in any role at any workplace, you also choose the responsibilities that go along with that role you fulfill-- not withstanding various emergencies in ones personal life.  Nonetheless, one is obligated to fulfill their responsibilities.  If one chooses to use their voice, they should understand and have a vehicle for when, why and how it can be used-- this will come across in the initial communication from leadership.  Chances are that the high performers will be more actively engaged and have done their research about critical aspects of the project.  If this is true, be mindful of how they can be utilized-- you as a leader may have overlooked something crucial to success.  Others are comfortable in their existing role and will be good or great listeners.

Capacity is the never ending concern for an organization.  You either need more of it or you need more of it.  Organizational capacity in terms of personnel is a priority especially if significant changes are occurring upward because you are working to increase the organizational capacity.  One of the most effective approaches is to always have a mentor/ mentee program in place.  No individual should have dominion in their department in such a way that succession planning is not occurring.  This is not a threat to an individual but a value to the organization.  If only one person has the ability to fully manage any particular division, its projects, etc. replacing that individual in the event of a crisis or lifestyle change for that person, represents  significant risk to the organization leaving it crippled of valuable intellectual capital.

Great leaders are also great listeners, they can clearly identify the culture of the organization.  Having a relationship with all levels of the organization is crucial.  It is one of the reasons why the reality television programs have CEO's taking on staff roles to capture a better understanding of what is really happening at levels other than their own.  Operating while only looking at the bottom line (dollars), prevents leaders from being effective- leave that work to comptrollers, finance and others (though those relationship is equally important).  Your point people(identified lower level leaders, including executive teams), should be able to accurately convey the sentiments of voices throughout and enable leaders to be better decision-maker-- this will also come across in the form of gratitude to employees.

There is no exact science to being a great leader, knowing how to lead and exhibiting superb leadership skills- it is a process.  Great leaders will always be in the learning groove, listening along the way, working to achieve the right balance so that their operations run smoothly.  Great leadership is bold and often bucks the trend when necessary.  U.S. President Barack Obama attempts this within the context of his philosophy about the presidency; Jack Welch did this with General Electric, and Steve Jobs with Apple Inc. was also very successful in this respect.  Great leaders will always ask questions of their organization, others and go to a great length to ask questions of themselves.

Shifting from Climate Change to Climate Extremes

 by Scotland Willis

The discussion over climate change, has been a hotly debated issue since it's inception.  Advocates fiercely reacting to opponents of climate related issues with great fervor to emphasize the seriousness of potential threats.  Now is not the time to add to that flame, but rather clarify- and continue to do so.  Choosing a discourse that is based on observations, reasonable extrapolations, and comparative data year over year, is imperative.  Action is a must.

Yes, it is impossible to predict exactly what is going to happen with the weather patterns around the world, many experts believe the extremes will continue to increase aggressively- a likely scenario.  But if speculation, projections and modeling aren't sufficient (a task carried out by experts in the field of science), then why do we depend so heavily on them with regards to economic market conditions?  Such models are known as market predictability models; hundreds of billions of dollars each day depend on such projections and their outcomes.  Why? Simple, they are a good indicator of human behavior with reference to increasing or decreasing the price of various commodities.

Why then, are such sophisticated systems dismissed in climate modeling?  Asserting that using probabilities and potentialities is not a reliable source, is a poor argument for non-action by policy makers and the general population for that matter.

It is important to be able to translate this into climate extremes and human behavior; market behavior is of course very different- or is it.

If we think of the environment in an inverse sort of way, we can look at it a bit differently.  While we can't change the weather based on how many people are going to buy a share of sunshine or speculate on rain; we do do this in a sense.  People bid on crops and other agribusiness all the time.  The performance of the weather significantly determines whether the price of wheat will go up or down.  Take the fires that destroyed the wheat crops in Russia.  People who speculated that the price of wheat would go down when those crops matured lost their bet in terms of stock futures.  Why? because the unexpected wildfires that destroyed the crops thus increasing the price of wheat.

And there is evidence that governments have been tampering with, artificially experimenting and manipulating the weather patterns over the years.  But the other and more important point is that we (the human species), can intentionally shift the way we impact the environment.  It is true that if agribusiness could make enough millions they would play war games with other countries crops but that is not the topic of discussion here.

The former discussion is solely to raise awareness of potentialities.  What our human impact is doing is having an accelerated impact on weather conditions.  Climate change will always occur, but climate extremes will significantly impact how we live and what quality of life we can expect.  The other point of the discussion above was to look at the comparison of using predictions and forecasting to influence our decisions about legislative policy related to climate change.  A book written about crowdsourcing (link here), provides some insights to predictive modeling as a powerful source to understanding economic market behavior

In 2011, the United States experienced twelve (12) extreme weather events; the record in 2008 was nine such events.  These are generally events that translate into $1 billion in damage or more.  Two good resources to defer to are both the NOAA (link here) and a Public Broadcasting Service program NewsHour (link hour).  From Snowfall records in January of 2011 that paralyzed the midsection of the United States to the hundreds of people who died from record tornadoes that hit the country; more extreme weather patterns are striking with great force and increasing frequency.  The NOAA estimates $52b in total damage for weather related events in 2011.  These unusual weather events are not solely in the U.S.

This past Fall season, my travels took me to Thailand during flooding that struck the far north and continued southward decimating communities.  And early in 2012, Latin America is experiencing recording flooding, wildfires and droughts (Huffington Post).  Along with the extreme hurricane type winds that battered the U.K., these patters emit a warning signs that should have legislators acting on firm policies to protect the native populations.  Planning is the key.  But when project like Rancho Cielo Solar Farm get canceled one must ask why, and not just point to the DOE-- but ask who is pulling the strings?  How do such project like this get usurped politically?  Start by asking what is at stake for the existing industries that have dominion over energy sources.

Real Solutions
Locating energy sources closer to the populations that use them is an important decision to make.  A tremendous amount of energy is lost when electricity from power generating plants are located long distances from the end user.  But no one wants a coal burning plant in their back yard (unless you live in Washington D.C. [ Capital Power Plant], 60,000 tons of carbon dioxide).  Solution, find a different power source.  Granted that in some areas, certain environments are not hospitable to certain power sources.  The efficiency  is simply a poor trade off.  But in many places geothermal, solar and wind are seriously under utilized.

What to Expect
Expect more extreme storms.  The capacity of the atmosphere to retain more energy and moisture means that the release of such energy will be more extreme.  Can we harness more of that extreme energy and find creative ways to stave off or offset the negative impact? Can't answer that one.  But we can trust what is before us and act accordingly.

Extremeness:
  • Snow: January record snowfall in Chicago blizzards that pounded 22 states in the midsection of the US;
  • Spring: Tornadoes 3 largest twister outbreaks in 6 wks $25b dmage;
  • 300 killed in 3 days
  •  Tuscaloosa, Alabama leveled due to tornadoes;
  • Joplin Missouri: Late May leveled killed over 150 people200 mph winds
  • Hurricane Irene; ravaging the East coastline
  • Droughts  TX $10b loss crops, livestock, timber, (hottest Summer in TX
  • over 6000 1m acres over labor day weekend.
  • Kansas 100 days over 100 temp

Relationships Don't Always Go Green

This article is more personal (man, woman, and green) in nature so if you are looking for a technical stimulant, you'll want to take a pass on this one.

Not too long ago I met someone new, in an attempt to explore building a relationship with someone.  She is an amazing individual with a list of accomplishments and a sense of independence and determination that would rival any over achiever.  I am honored to share a part of my life with her.

As most new relationships go, we had a conversation about attributes we appreciated about one and other as well as expectations.  Within this context, she expressed concern about her personal lifestyle and not wanting to be pressured to change.  This came on the heels of a statement about my commitment to sustainability as my lifestyle relates to it.  My lifestyle by far exceeds her level of commitment to sustainability, which forced her to share that such a chasm could very well be too much of a hurdle to overcome.

It is very early in the relationship so there is no real level of commitment at this point, this can also be known as the discovery period.  You learn about the other persons habits, lifestyle etc. and determine if going forward makes sense.  The other good thing about these tougher conversations is that you are not too engulfed in the relationship that you can't see daylight on the other side because all that seems to matter is how caught up you are in the moment of emotions, like you wound up and twisted in a potpourri of your favorite chocolates.  It is great that our more sensible/ mature side has prevailed.

My response to her concern was simple; as a grown woman, I don't expect her to change her lifestyle rather I believe my lifestyle habits might encourage her to change her own after seeing the ease of sustainable adaptations.

I do what is good for me and the environment; my hope is that my behaviors and lifestyle choices will influence people in a way that encourages them to make significant changes- of their own volition.  Such changes will likely have a more profound impact not only on the environment, but will also systematically foster changes in people who are not as committed, to shifting lifestyle impact on climate change.  So while I don't expect her to change her lifestyle, I do expect that my choices will encourage her to make lifestyle changes.

My lifestyle choices have evolved over time.  Because of my circumstances or personal choices; making the adaptations have been profoundly easier for me than such changes might be for virtually all other people.  This does not make me a super hero (except perhaps in my own mind), but stands to explain how I have positioned myself for success relative to environmental sustainability issues and that I can continue to do so- a priority in my life.  Just as one must position themselves for financial success by strategically positioning specific actions and objectives, so have I done with sustainability.  Each day I grow better at what I am capable of doing because of my intentions.

Where does this leave our relationship, I cannot say with certainty, but choosing to broach the conversation positions each of us to make well informed decisions going forward and it will not be a hurdle that was stands in the way of our pursuit of happiness.

Unexpected Changes to a Greener Planet

Deliberations, sometimes they get in the way of getting done what we believe in.  Consideration for this, consideration for that; what will they think; WHAT IF!!!  Eeeeak!

Stop... breathe, and do what you believe in.  This is a much simpler statement than the what our genetic coding suggest we go through for decision-making but there is more than a speck of truth in it.  There is so much activity in sustainability and climate change often it feels like someone else is or can do whatever is on your mind- not so.  Each person acts as another potential persuasive vehicle to advance work tremendously important to protecting the planet.  Even if its been said, say it again, add a twist.  We must constantly strive to balance protecting the natural resources accessible to us and the way we use them.  There are millions of people, billions for that matter, waiting for someone with the right tone, approach or message that will resonate with them enough to take active steps to contribute to making a different in the many areas that make up sustainability and preservation.

After a brief hiatus, returning to this work is paramount for me; there is so much work to be done and I cannot count on what everyone else will do so I will continue to do my part and be more diligent in doing so.  Expect more articles from me more frequently, that share important advances in technology, resources, activities and changes in climate related matters.  I don't have all the answers but I feel reinvigorated after returning from Asia and having gone through a certain cleansing for myself.  I found what I needed to regroup and continue with what I believe in.

The world is a beautiful place; I want to fulfill my role in it and preserve it for as long as possible.  My goal is to help inspire others to do the same by sharing my knowledge and determination to do the same.  What you don't find here (looking4answers) you will find here ( at green elements).

Recently I spoke with my ex-wife who shared with me some amazing progress I never thought I would hear come from her lips; I Love her she is an amazing woman.  This evening she told me all of the steps she was taking to be a more active participant in climate consciousness.  Throughout the entire conversation I was smiling to myself realizing how important it is to continue the work.  You see, we don't always know when what we share with others will have the desired affect, but we can't allow that to slow us down or prevent us from doing the work.  What did she share? 1) She is walking our son to school 2) she is (as well as my son) designating a separate disposal for recycling and trash- and my son is keeping her on her toes; 3) she has replaced all the lighting in her home with CFL; 4) she has taken a conscious step to reducing the highly processed food and nearly eliminated soda from her/ their diet.  YAHOOW-OOOOOh!  Nothing could make me happier relative to what changes she is making regarding climate change.

I want to remind everyone that CFL can be extremely dangerous so follow the necessary precautions when handling them.  I have provided a link here >> What should I do if I break a bulb?  .  LED is really the best lighting technology but pricing is still an issue.

Life without Microsoft-- Linux

Choices.  Academic, personal, social, there are so many choices.  Combine choices with fear; and you can go into a type of psychological paralysis in making simple decisions about any of the above categories.  In fact, choices are not necessarily the difficult task, but the fear of making choices is.  More unfortunate is that fear (when managed methodically) can control how we behave, react and live.  From the fear of terrorist attacks to choosing not to use certain operating systems; we sink in our courage to stand up to what is unjust or perhaps we fail to stand up because we want to be as comfortable as possible.  Tonight is different; though it can be said, for me every day is different.  Not one to follow the normal crest on the wave, I dumped Microsoft this evening with the help of a new and very good friend.

I took up the Linux system; and if you are not familiar with Linux, make it a point to learn about it.  While I will say that the process is rather time consuming (largely due to my slow internet connection), learning and observing the process of upgrading my operating system (OS) from MS to Linux was the best decision I every made from a technology perspective.  But other decisions led up to that which cannot be ignored.

I took time off from graduate school to work on writing my book.  Other things came up and leading to this summer being one of the best I have had in my entire life.  People I met, places I have and am going, decisions I've made, have all played a role in the shedding of MS to Linux.  I am a firm believer in the power of subatomic particles developing an organic attraction to other subatomic particles in a way that brings people and systems together that would otherwise not occur; it influences our decision-making in many ways to respond to the nature of those subatomic particles that behave in similar ways.  It is the very conversation that lead to a conversation with my physicist friend who also installed my new operating system.  Were it not for these deep conversation there is a strong possibility I would never have had the opportunity to install Linux on my computer.

Not that it is critical to know, but Linux is much less susceptible to viruses, less resource consuming, more efficient and as simple to navigate as the system I was previously using.  In fact, I have more space on my hard drive, more efficient use of my hard drive and more choices for how I use my computer than every before.

Granted that I have a physicist willing to take the time to walk me through the installation and set up of Linux, but I would be willing to share the experience and the process for installing Linux over the more traditional OS any time.

I no longer have a fear of whether or not the system will work; fear of losing my programs or documents because the majority of people are using another OS; I have taking the confidence of my decision-making up a notch, because quite simply, I am not one to follow the pack.

We have all choices to make; don't be blinded by the system set up to keep you in fear or create patterns that prevent you from exploring; whether that means exploring life, cultures, science, or different technology.

One translation of Ubuntu, I am what I am because of who we are (from Wikipedia).  This is the source of the Linux OS which I installed.  Open source is an important framework from which the Internet was modeled as well as the networks it sustains, some elements have reemerged as a result of the Internet.  As new systems emerge, it is important to exercise the liberation of the social network of the Internet which more resembles society at large.  Moreover it resembles what somewhat reflects the nature of the Earth, that everyone take ownership of and is able to participate in the development and maintenance of it.

It is my belief that the human experience is suppose to be general, but develop an expertise; better yet, be a great generalist with expertise in multiple areas- you will increase you intellectual capital.  I am as grateful for my beginning education in epidemiology and environmental engineering as I am to have Linux as an alternative to the other OS; for without either, I would not have be able to be where I am today.  Knowledge is power, and my epi experience has granted me insights into life I never would have known.

I continue to be as happy about life and my experience in it as I can possibly be.  I am free for fear regardless of what tomorrow brings; I am embracing the moment...right...now.

If you have the opportunity to installing a new OS such as Linux, do it.  I can't promise you will be as happy as I am, but then you will have to make your own choices-- won't you.

Good fortune to all!

Peering into the Future

by Scotland Willis

Peering into the Future is the title for my new book which I expect to be out early to mid next year.  This book is about the impact, implications and phenomena of peer-to-peer networks.

The world is an amazing place from a human perspective, it a benefit we (reasoning, abstract thinking and introspection) we experience as a result of our genetic superiority.  Technology has made this experience more amazing by allowing us to connect over vast spaces and discover things that would once have been considered impossible.

And while technology typically creates isolation and distance among people, the notion of cooperative consumption serves as a medium to help reconnect people; peer-to-peer (p2p) networks serve the same function.  As it turns out, p2p networks bring people with common interests together and familiarize individuals with like-minded people, thereby accelerating the bond and relationship process.  While p2p networks can serve as a vehicle to bring groups together, cooperative consumption serves as a similar medium, but it depends on a surplus system.  I have something that meets your needs and I have little or no use for it at the time.

Key to all of this exchange of goods or services in either system is a pivotal foundation of trust.  Trust is the one element that would force the entire system to collapse.  But with so many hundreds of millions of people engaged the level of compromised trust is not as prevalent as it could be for several reasons.

As we advance the use of the internet system, banks, business and others who depend on it as a resource for their commerce, it is critical that they themselves demonstrate to their customers that the system is trust worthy.  Despite cyber crimes costing hundreds of billions of dollars over the years, the general populations faith in the Internet continue to grow if you look at it in terms of the number of users.  And that decision is what fosters the growth of peer to peer networks.

What once was considered a barrier to human interaction is not serving as a force that brings people together for different reasons; it may be goods or services or it may be a social calling, either way, more people are being connected as the world becomes a smaller social environment.

Everyone should know Balance

by Scotland Willis

Balance is something we strive for in our life.  We see it in how we try to manage work and our Clif climbing
personal life; balance between consumption and preserving the environment; balancing disruptions and getting tasks done; and in our personal health versus stress.  The list is extensive.  By and large balance is a very difficult goal to achieve; this assertion could be made anywhere in the world.

So here is something to consider about balance you may not have thought of; 1) the most important balance in our body is pH balance; while that may sound simple, achieving it is like trying to balance yourself on a tightrope (ok perhaps not that difficult but it might seem that way) but certainly as challenging to achieve balance in other areas of our life; 2) alkaline and acids make up these two very important chemical that represent this balance, which also influence many other activities that occur in our body.

A bit more understanding migh make you more conscious about your eating decisions and thereby resulting in a happier healthier you.

So why is this make up so important?  Let's not   focus on things like kidney, liver and blood disease, to avoid talking about thsi from a medical perspective- though they are legitimately related to the matter at hand.  Rather I would like to share important factors to understand which will make the importance of acids and alkaline a little easier to digest.

Most foods (especially processed foods) have high levels of sugar or high fructose.  The result is that most of our diet is made up of sugary acids that means that we have a alkaline deficit much more often than not in our body, across the majority of our U.S. population.  Alkaline foods mean more green foods and raw veggies (which don't appeal to most peoples taste buds the way sugary sweets do).  It's time to change that.

Keep this in mind increasing your alkaline intake will result in more energy, healthier bone structure and a wide range of health benefits including lower blood sugar levels, less chances of heart disease and the other major threats to human health.  For children it can mean improved neurological performance.
Understanding the Scale

The pH scale reflect whether the pH in your body is acidic or alkaline.  The scale ranges from 1 to 14.  A pH of 7 is considered neutral; above 7 is considered alkaline below 7 is considered acidic.  Seven then is the ideal balance for humans.  Because we have a diet that is so heavily influenced by sugars, achieving the balance (i.e., consuming more raw or alkaline foods) is a real challenge.

Less important to understand but good to know is this:  a pH of 4 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 5 and 100 times (10 times 10) more acidic than a pH of 6. The same holds true for pH values above 7, each of which is ten times more alkaline—another way to say basic—than the next lower whole value. For example, a pH of 10 is ten times more alkaline than a pH of 9 (epa).  Sounds impressive but the simlicity if each level of increase refelcts an acidic increase of ten times that.  The same would be true for alkaline, except most people don't have alkaline saturated diets.

People and Plant Benefits
And here is something else you probably did not know; your plants require a similar pH balance to that of humans. Depending on what region of the world your food is from will also influence whether that food requires more alkaline or acid in its uptake.  Beets for example do best in a alkaline environment(pH) around 7-8; while grass  are slightly acidic or close to neutral between 6.5 to 7.  Basically plant life also thrives in close to this balance of 7.

All of this makes sense if you consider a couple of different points: 1) we consume a lot of plant life (or we should)  so we should attempt to maintain a similar balance 2) we are evolved from single cellular organism that thrived on plant life (if you subscribe to the scientific theory) as such, our biological system  should have similar requirements.

Maintaining a better pH balance means a better quality of life.  Eating more alkaline and raw vegetables, fewer sugary and processed foods (which includes milk) will reduce the negative affects of an acidic body.

If you are a gardner, seek to balance your soil as well (there are devices to monitor this).  I use to have a 100 gallon ( 378 liters)  salt water aquarium at one point; maintaining the pH balance was critical to the fish survival, so it is no surprise the level of importance pH has on the body for me.
From healthy bones to healthy blood, pH affects everything about you and your bodily function.
Please work harder to stay healthy by balancing what you eat and likely adding more alkaline type food to your diet, while consuming less sugary and processed foods.

Charles & I

I have a Love affair with Charles, he is robust, daring, at times, calming and seductive.  He serves as my best friend who helps me reflect when the complexities of life leave me twisted; like a person who discovers they made a bad career choice as a contortionist, when they climb into a box and discover they are claustrophobic.

No I'm no more gay than I am homophobic, I just happen to be passionate about the Charles River.  It is my favorite refuge in Boston, with which I have a life long relationship.   Locally known as The Charles, it would be easy for anyone, at first glance, to misinterpret my relationship with The Charles; but my intimate experience stems from a long history.  I would venture to guess that I am not alone in this affinity that exists between us.  I like to believe that there are thousands of others who share a similar passion, they just have not come out of the closet as of yet.

Though I don't know how many can claim as meaningful a relationship as myself with Charles, I encourage visitors and residents alike to explore.

When I was but four years old, my family use to make weekly trips to The Charles.  I  am certain that this was a declaration of my relationship early in life with Him.

From Highland Park in Roxbury, my mom strapped me into the plaid cushioned seat,  metal arm rests unfolded, and back rest settled upon the rear frame of the bike-- off we went.  The preparation alone was enough to raise the anticipation of a child.  Whisking down the steep hills from Highland Park, cruising down Mass Ave. and onto the Charles! In those days the traffic on the streets was a mere inconvenience, nothing like today.  Yep those memories go back nearly 35 years. It would be an interesting experiment to measure the brain activity then and compare it to my response today to see how they measure up against each other, in terms of my pleasure.  Special events like the 4th-of-July, were among the most memorable, but any excuse to head to The Charles was sufficient.

Fast forward 35 years and like a stroke of good fortune, I began sailing on The Charles in 1997, after receiving a membership to Community Boating Inc.,  for lessons from my mother- always taking care of me in one way or another.  This experience allowed me to renew my commitment; The Charles provided me with a new set of lenses with which to appreciate his greatness.  And as only a best friend could do, He chided me all along the way, right through to my helmsman- and beyond.  No anxiety, never any threat of personal welfare and complete and utter happiness.  No more than six years later I convinced myself to purchase a sailboat.  Reticent in my decision, I questioned my abandonment of my long time friend, my confidant, my soul mate.

I came to the resolve that our relationship was far to substantive for such a decision to plague our history, which had allowed me to overcome many barriers internally and externally.  Despite my moving away, or gaining weight, or purchasing a boat, somehow we always managed to realign ourselves to each other.  But I know The Charles bare the brunt of burden as I did little more than advocate for his cleanliness and utility to others in the city- perhaps that is all he requires.

Driven by the need to be near his body of water; as a runner, I would race toward him during my best running years; following a path similar to the cycling route I recall my family taking when I was but a child.  There is a lot more traffic now, so I have found new strategies to avoid over stimulation of these evolving changes.  Sometimes I would go early in the morning, other times late at night; if I could not resist, and it was the middle of the day, the Southwest Corridor was the best route.  Dartmouth was always my favorite transition though.  Northwest on Dartmouth and my adrenaline would shift into overdrive.  On a good day, I could almost smell the Charles.   Over the years that has not changed

The challenge was never whether or not to go but rather which route can I take that will extend the time I can afford to spend here.  Yeah, across Dartmouth, up the Storrow Dr. side, over the John Weeks Bridge, down Memorial Drive to the Longfellow and back around towards the overpass.  A pause on a reward day to absorb the offerings of The Charles- at the Aurthur Fiedler monument; OK back to Dartmouth, and I was off again- see you tomorrow.

The Charles was and always will be my pinnacle destination, regardless of where I reside or what lifestyle changes occur for me.  Over the past few years, I have taken over 700 photographs of The Charles; he is always posing, always ready, providing yet another function for my form-- inspired.

Through every season I recognize his long list of defining characteristics, consulate, artist of the city, ice sculptor, mariner, advisor, model, laureate, care taker, dog walker, well wisher; a ubiquitous and ominous list to be sure.

Often I find myself wishing I could just bottle up all the great moments and times we spend together because it is so fulfilling.  Not every day can be perfect, but every day I spend on The Charles is at least that.
